Why choose concrete for your driveway? Here are seven big reasons!
1 – An excellent long-term investment
People are occasionally deterred from choosing a concrete driveway because it costs marginally more than some other options like asphalt. However, the slightly higher upfront costs give you a driveway that should last longer than other alternatives. Properly installed, a concrete driveway can easily last 20-30 years at least.
2 – Superb durability
Concrete excels at holding up heavy weights and resisting downwards crushing forces. This makes it perfect material for driveways that have to support large vehicles, potentially for a long time. That durability is one of the big reasons that concrete driveways are able to last for so long.
3 – Low maintenance
Concrete driveways are easy to take care of. Just periodically sweep or wash them to get rid of loose debris on the surface. Be sure to clean up fluid spills, like oil spills, quickly since they can stain the surface. Plus, even if a small crack or hole develops, it can be patched by applying a bit more concrete.
4 – No damage from sunlight
One of the big reasons asphalt isn’t the best choice for driveways is that asphalt reacts badly to heat and to UV rays, causing it to become brittle unless it’s regularly coated to resist the sun. Concrete, on the other hand, has no such problem. It can sit in the sun all day and won’t be affected at all.
5 – Environmental friendliness
Concrete is one of the most eco-friendly building materials around. It’s basically just crushed stone, sand, and water, all of which we have plenty of. On the other hand, asphalt requires petroleum products to produce. Further, concrete is almost infinitely recyclable. If an old concrete slab is removed, it’ll probably be smashed to bits and turned into new concrete.
6 – Easy snow/ice removal
Unless the underlying soil shifts, concrete maintains its flatness for a long time – making it easier to shovel or run a snowblower over. In addition, concrete won’t be harmed by most common de-icing chemicals, unlike other alternatives like asphalt.
7 – Improved sellability
A new driveway can be a great selling point when attracting buyers to a home. On the other hand, a broken driveway will be a deterrent to selling. Replacing your driveway is a cost-effective way to enhance your curb appeal!
